THE CIRCLE- THE DEATH OF PRIVACY

KNOWING IS GOOD. KNOWING EVERYTHING IS BETTER.
Just finished watching The Circle movie. I know I’m late, but work keeps me busy.  Getting straight into the performance aspect, Emma Watson in one of her best roles till date. Tom Hanks does justice to his role to the full as always.  Great concept, superb screenplay and excellent direction make it a racy movie that keeps viewers guessing what comes next, right from the moment Mae steps into The Circle HQ.

The movie is a great watch and a novel idea to follow, for millennial entrepreneurs. What made me think about the movie and the concept after watching it was what it shows. The Circle is shown as the all-knowing social network where everything and everyone are connected and can easily be tracked. The concepts of SeeChange, SoulSearch, etc are brilliant but simply murdering privacy. Though not available to the public, I’m sure the secret service agencies do have SeeChange like technologies in place for implementation.

The movie or rather the plot celebrates Mae being “completely transparent ” but how would it be if the whole world could watch you the whole day? How would it feel knowing you are being under surveillance by some organization? The Circle or rather the concept of it is how sinister, companies/corporations can get. That’s unmetered, unchecked, undeterred surveillance on a users life, both private and personal, with the user’s consent. Even when Mae is chosen as the transparent one, it should be noticed that Eamon and Tom in the movie stay out of transparency. When its forced upon them, they prefer to stay silent or walk out.  The killer side of social media is shown when Mae’s friend Mercer builds a beautiful chandelier and receives death threats when Mae posts a picture of it on The Circle. SoulSearch is a great concept to track people in real time, the concept will be in place in a few years, implemented by the governments.  Once you get in, there’s no way out. In the end, Mae ends up helplessly watching her friend die while demoing SoulSearch, almost being Mercer’s killer.

Going by the current growth path, a doubt that might arise in everyone’s mind is “Is Facebook becoming The Circle? ”

Facebook is free, open and awesome. So is The Circle. It does make money through ads, but a good part of pie can be suspected to arise from the user data(Demographics, personal details, posts, online behaviour and all other blah blah) that are being sold to other companies. Secrets are lies, that’s what the movie says. Privacy is a joke these days since we all agree and give consent to all the companies, corporation or websites to access our data anytime as they wish. If you have any doubts regarding that,  try uninstalling the Messenger app on your Android/iOS smartphone and install it again. During reinstall, carefully read the Terms & Conditions of the app. You will expressly give your consent to use your phone camera or microphone without even when you aren’t using the app. Facebook is free, Instagram is free and WhatsApp is free.  Mr.Zuck isn’t crazy to provide us with all the wonderful stuff just for ad revenue.   I’m not accusing Facebook of being The Circle. Given the current direction the company is going, it is the right contender to be the real-life ‘The Circle’.Not just Facebook, even the latest entrant in the Indian telecom scenario, Jio, can be The Circle. The company first gives you unlimited data, calls, SMS and whatnot, that too for free. Once the whole of India has started using Jio, Mr.Ambani can’t recoup the investment he made just by making all customers subscribe to Jio Prime or making them recharge their numbers.Once people are hooked to their service, Jio can easily make the now free services paid and the public would happily comply with it since they got addicted to being connected 24/7. The calls, texts, downloads the browsing habits of customers would be mapped and sold. It’s Big Data!!!

The time when we are monitored in every step is not so far. A minute of silence for privacy which would be murdered then and be history.

Want a great deal on web hosting to monetize your blog?

Blogging for many is a great way to make some money. Though it seems to be easy, getting traffic and making money off your blog takes a lot of hard work and dedication to do it. Since WordPress.com doesn’t let you monetize your free blog, the only way is to get serious about blogging and self-host it.

Self-hosting your blog is the first step in monetizing the content you create. It lets you have more control over your blog and have access to much more features than on a free blog.  That said, self-hosting has its own cons. Once self-hosted, the security and backup of your blog are of great concern since no one will manage that for you(That’s one reason I stick with this free WordPress blog, I’m too lazy). After finding your perfect domain name, choosing a reliable web hosting provider is important.
While selecting a web hosting service, utmost care is to be taken since it can make or break the fate of your blog. Reliable web hosts which provide maximum uptime and great service at a good price tag is a rarity these days. If you are really serious,  it is best to invest some money in popular services like GoDaddy, SiteGround, Bluehost, etc.  Though these providers offer great services, their offerings come at a premium price tag. If you are a rookie/hobby blogger looking to upgrade, the money to invest in these services would look like a lot. Other providers offering cheaper service have their downsides too.
Having used a lot of web hosting services (from free to premium) for previous projects, I recently found a service provider offering good service and a happy price(for any hobbyist/beginner blogger).

Their services start at $2.34 annually (to try and get a hold of how things work) for shared hosting. I never had an uptime issue for long. When I had trouble, the support team was more than happy to help. Now I would like to share it with you all. Want a sweet deal on a great service?

Follow the link below or click HERE to get a special deal if you are lucky on your first order. Buy the plan that suits your needs ( and budget ) and try making some money off your blog.

Why you should use a VPN in blogging

Blogging is a great way for people to express what they are passionate about in the best way. When passion helps get a paycheck while blogging, why leave that pile of money and walk away?

Majority of the affiliate marketing companies and Google Adsense value clicks from the US/UK regions more than from any other country. How do bloggers(the serious ones) keep track of or check how their blog performs in front of those valued clickers? For a blogger from India, Australia, China, Singapore, Brazil or Bulgaria, they will never get a preview of how their blog looks like for The US readers. The best way to check would be to use a VPN.

WHAT IS A VPN?
virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running across the VPN may, therefore, benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network.
Though the above-mentioned blah blah about VPNs is not much focused by users, they are mostly used to bypass geographic restrictions for certain websites in many countries. Indians till recently used VPNs to watch their favourite shows on Netflix, the Chinese use it for almost everything, the majority of expats with a smartphone in the UAE  use it to bypass firewalls and make VoIP calls.

And NOW.

You can have one of the best VPNs available at a staggering discount . Who wouldn’t want a nice sweet deal on something very handy? Here’s how.

Hidden24 VPN is a cool new VPN to get a preview of how your website looks and performs in the UK/US from where the clicks matter the most. Want to know what’s the magic deal you are about to get? No spoilers here.

Click HERE to get your deal for a premium service at a modest cost. Your readers, blog and pocket would be happy.

Happy blogging,

Godspeed.

The Worst Trip

Wrote this in malayalam so that someone would feel a regional connect and raise their voice.

First Ever Short Story

Hi folks, long time since I wrote something here. Work keeps me busy these days. Studying for Master’s and running two fledgling businesses takes a lot of time. Had mentioned in one of the previous posts about something I thought I had lost. Got it after I recovered my old hard drive. Recovered my very first attempt at writing something which I thought was Fiction back then(Now I know, it’s a pile of sh*t). Still, I want to share it here. It was supposed to be a short story thought half cooked batch of words doesn’t look like one. I still haven’t figured out what it is, thus it has no name.

I

“Are we late?” asked Jamal, as Jeff climbed on to the van which had come to get him.

Annoyed that everyone else had moved to another hotel from the cottage they were staying, he too wanted to follow. The cottage was part of a resort very close to the regional military base. But he found the place interesting. Now all he wanted to do was complete his assignment and leave the country.

Seeing a serious face, Jamal enquired, “You do not look like you In a good mood. What happens, sir?”

Hiding his anger he said,” it’s nothing. Please drive safe.I wanna get some rest.”

Looking at the fast-moving landscape, he wondered what the heck was wrong with the world. One country had its people being slaughtered by the government because they demanded a democratic, elected government. Another had a democratic government overthrown by the army and the citizens were out in the streets, demanding the reinstatement of the government and getting killed for it.

The sudden jerk woke him from his thoughts.

“We are here, sir” announced Jamal as he jumped out and opened the door for Jeff.

He walked slowly into the square. All he could see was people all over the place, weeping in grief. The army had brutally fired at the protesters and he was late to the scene. His assignment was to cover the happenings in this country and get back to the office. Looking at his watch made him angrier since his camera crew was not yet there. Just as he took out his phone, the camera crew van screeched to halt next to him. They made up for the late coming by getting ready for the shoot in a minute.

Facing the camera, Jeff took the mic and signalled the camera crew to start the shot.
“Good morning, we are now at the central square where the protesters had camped for the night. All you can see here is blood all over the place. There were about 1000 protesters at the square during the fire and many have been injured. The firing took place at around midnight without any visible provocation. I bet this is going to make things worse. ”
“ This is Jeff Stevens, reporting from the national capital. We will keep you updated about the happenings around the city.Signing off for now,”

He switched the microphone off and signalled to stop recording. He was supposed to be at the Hotel Holiday Inn about 15 kilometres away from the capital. Hearing of the incident, they planned a quick detour that they won’t be late for the meeting. The meeting was on the media operations and their return home.Though he wanted to be back home, he did not want to attend the meeting.

While getting inside the van, he said,” Hey Jamal, take me to the cottage.I don’t feel like going to the hotel.”

“But sir, they said I have to bring you to the hotel.”

“No buts,” he was interrupted by his phone. It was Adam, the manager from the embassy for their assignment here

“ Hi Adam, what’s bothering you now?”

“I want you to be here in an hour” shouted Adam over the phone.

“Relax, what’s the meeting for?”
“Well, it’s regarding your trip back home”

“That’s good. Will try to be there on time.”

“Bye”.

The meeting was uneventful. All the foreign press crews were to return to their home countries in 3 days and the embassies were making arrangements for that. On the way back to the cottage, Jeff made preparations to complete the book he was working on for quite some time. His iPhone became a notepad scribbled all over.

He was dead tired by the time he reached the resort and the first thing he did was jump onto the couch.

He woke up tired. The phone display showed him it was almost midnight. The night was damp. Even though it was mid-December, the air was dead .an uneasy feeling crept into a corner of his mind. Taking his diary and walking out of the cottage made him feel better .the climate outside was much better.

His phone kept ringing as he settled on the chair outside the cottage and he ignored the wailing phone.

He had this uneasiness right from the moment he set foot on this country. Asking his driver to leave, he started with his book.It was nearing completion. All he had to do was finish the manuscript. Closing his eyes, he tried to concentrate on what he had to do.

He was all alone in the villa till 7 in the morning next day. Though having all the time to complete the book, he was in some unusual urgency.

It was smooth sailing. He had in mind exactly what he had to write. It didn’t even take a minute to pause and contemplate. On closing the diary, he heard the clock striking 10 from the dining room of his cottage. It was time to take a break. The resort car, a Range Rover was parked near the fence. He could hear the hum of helicopters from the nearby army base. The resort was way too close to the base.

Walking back to the cottage he heard a faint whirr of engines.Out side, he saw two small black aircraft flying low. What made him notice the aircraft was something on its fuselage.

‘No way’ he thought.

‘What’s my country’s aircraft doing here at this time?’

He raced inside to get his camera. Just as he was about to get a good click, he saw a flash of light leaving the aircraft. The next moment he saw the Range Rover turn into a ball of fire.  Right after he saw the car on fire, he felt a blinding flash of light along with searing pain followed by a deafening boom.

“ We are at the resort which was destroyed in the attack last night on the army base. The army base has suffered significant damage. The resort is close to the base and was partly destroyed in the attack. The last occupants were the media personnel from all over the world. Fortunately, everyone except one had moved out to the neutral areas following a notification from the embassies. Rescue teams have been deployed to find if the lone occupant has survived.

Ahmed Khandavi switched his microphone off and moved to the army base which was almost totally destroyed. He had to cover the attack and get back to the studio in time for the show since their OB vans were being used to shift people to secure locations.

Seargent David Cooper walked towards the rubble. He was with the UN Troops. All he could see there were mounds of concrete, steel and wood. That was all remaining of the cottage. He noticed a red object under a slab of concrete. It was a thick leather bound diary. Hoping to find out the identity of its owner he flipped to the first page. There were no details. On the next page, he found something like the beginning of a report scribbled on the paper which read,

“DEMOCRACY: THE LAMENT OF A NATION”.

Leafing through the pages, he found the book’s owner.

The lines on the monitor were starting to flatten. All efforts to revive him were getting in vain.

That’s it folks. The end was planned to be this guy winning the Pulitzer Prize(Thank goodness, i didn’t write such madness).Do comment your word on it.
